#9 – Climb Mt Baldy
Back in January, Roger and I came up with a list of 30 Things to Do in Chicagoland (you see the list here). I’ve done #9 before, but since Mr Me’s parents live very close to this dune, we stopped there the other day so we could document it and prove we’ve climbed it.
So, #9 – Climb Mt Baldy in Indiana Dunes National Park
1. Friendly Guide asked us, “You folks wantin’ to climb the dune?”
Me, noticing an awful lot of orange fencing around the dune: “Can we?”
Guide: “You have to take the long way ’round, because the dune is moving four feet a year and the Army Corp of Engineers might have to come in and move it back.”
2. We begin the climb, noticing this ominous sign:

3. We soldiered on, not letting a mean sign slow us down. I personally like the fact that it called it the “Summit.” Makes me feel like I accomplished something. Here’s Mr Me, to show you how steep the climb is:

4. And here’s Me at the Summit! #9 checked off the list!(Note that it looks like a gentle slope down the side of Mt Baldy – it’s not. This dune is huge and while we were climbing down, you can see tops of birch trees sticking out of the sand. Someone told us the dune moves feet every year and could eventually move right into Michigan City!)

Ed Note: It would be impossible to let this post go without noting that Mt Baldy Sand Dune was the place Mr Me first declared his love for Me In Place herself. This weekend Mr and Mrs Me celebrated their 12th Wedding Anniversary!

Very cool. We should have said “climb up and roll down.”
