They Grow Up So Fast

I blinked back the tears as I watched her, my firstborn, my precious little baby who is now a seven year old – a girl with her own opinions, her own thoughts and her own way of doing things. Always a bit cautious about new things, she hung back, waiting for my direction. “Hey, Buddy, go ahead, you know what to do, ” I told her.

Inside I was telling myself not to push, not to “hover,” just let her figure it out. I had my own ideas of how it should be done, but I knew I needed to let her experience this independence. She hesitated, then began, and I realized The Moment had come. It had taken seven years, but here it was… the day my daughter could load the dishwasher by herself.

I just… I just… sniff. Sniff. It’s a wonderful thing, my friends.

Hm… the 7 yo can do dishes, the 3yo can order books for me, I better start teaching that 5yo to mow the lawn.

  1. Don’t forget laundry. Kids can handle laundry at a pretty young age.

  2. Yeah, they all help me with laundry – definitely a bonus to having kids! And you have to use them while
they are at the age where they think it’s actually fun! :)
