2008

I give up.
I’m an optimist, but even optimists get to the point where they have to put down their pom-poms sometimes.

I kept thinking today about what word would I use to describe 2008. I came up with the perfect word: flummoxed. 2008 flummoxed me. I spent weeks not being able to move because of an inflamed disc in my back. We had some rough times with friends who ended up not being who they said they were. We had financial ups and downs. We had family ups and downs. You did too, right? Even today 2008 tried to throw us a curveball – sending us a boatload of irritating things to deal with.

Mr MIP and I are looking forward to saying goodbye to 2008. I kept trying to be upbeat – “We’ll just relax and watch a movie and soon it will be over and we can have a brand new start and we’ll make goals for the new year and I bought you a new pen to write your goals out…” But as we were getting ready to kick this stupid year out the door, guess what news story I heard?

They traded my Mark DeRosa to Cleveland.

I give up.

(I asked Mr MIP: “What’s the saddest song you know?” He came up with this one: Mad World by Tears for Fears. How depressing is this song? Guess I’ll wallow in it for the next three hours anyway. My saddest song is the second one playing, “Our Town” by Iris Dement.)

  1. Unfortunately, they traded Marky D to another team that always seems to get it wrong, so you probably won’t even be able to cheer for him in the playoffs like we could for Greg Maddux or your last Cubs crush (I don’t even remember his name). Oh well…hopefully the trade turns into something good for the Cubs.

And AMEN to bidding goodbye to 2008. It really was an ugly year – much of the bad stuff was self-inflicted, but even so, a great big Get Out and Don’t Come Back to 2008!

  2. Agreed.. I will be happy to help you usher out 2008.. it wasn’t a very good year. :-(

    But HELLO to 2009!!!

  3. I thought of you when I heard about the Mark DeRosa trade. I’m sorry!

  4. Well, Kelli…
It’s over now. 2009 is here. Let’s see what change it will bring. We’ve been promised, right?

  5. ……..thought about you last night while watching the sports on the news……boo! Yup, I agree – we are also glad to see the end of ’08!! :-) At least there are lots of us in the same boat – makes it a little easier to take!

  6. Is everyone crazy? There were some very good things that happened in 2008. Brittney got straightened out, didn’t she, somewhat, for her anyway? Angie and Brad had more babies. Actually, there is some darkness coming to light which is a good thing, right? Okay I’ll stop now cuz the music makes me want to wallow in the glass half empty, and I just don’t want to do that…

  7. thanks all. i know we’re all in this together.
