so glad i’m not raising kids in a castle
Brian the Station Manager picked us up at the airport and took us straight to our first official Irish Touristy Spot: Bunratty Castle. We were giddy with excitement about being there…or was that giddy with having stayed up all night watching in-flight movies?
Either way, Bunratty Castle is worth a stop if you’ll be near there anytime soon.

The castle steps are very steep and get narrower as you go up. Roger later told us this was so the women and children could go up into the tower and kept safe from the warriors/soldiers. Since the soldiers had such huge armor on, they wouldn’t be able to fit up the towers. Whatever. I was thinking more about how worried I’d be if I was a mother of a toddler who was trying to climb those stairs. Imagine the bumps and bruises!
Around the castle are houses built in the traditional way of different time periods of Ireland.
While walking around the grounds, we were able to get to know Brian a little bit. He won me over immediately with his subtle sense of humor and his kindness in welcoming us. Here are Steve and Brian standing on top of Bunratty Castle:

We apologized forĀ being crazy Americans who just had to take a picture of this sign. But, really, how exciting is it to see a sign showing the way to Galway and Limerick? Okay…maybe we needed to get to bed at this point!
